How to Prevent Dark Spots This Summer?

Sun-kissed skin, beach trips, and endless fun in the sun – the season is almost here! (I've never been more excited, yay!) But with all the outdoor activities awaiting, your skin faces the risk of developing dark spots. While these spots can be a nuisance and affect self-confidence for some, understanding what they are and how to prevent them can keep your skin healthy and even, and your self-confidence high!

What's the Difference Between Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation?

Surely I'm not the only one who used to confuse the two (am I?), which is why I thought we should start by addressing the difference between them. Dark spots, also known as sun spots or age spots, are small, flat patches on your skin that form due to excessive sun exposure. These spots are a form of hyperpigmentation, but not all hyperpigmentation is the same. Hyperpigmentation refers to any condition where your skin produces excess melanin, resulting in darker areas. This can include melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (like acne scars), and, of course, sun-induced dark spots. While dark spots are specifically caused by UV damage, hyperpigmentation can have various triggers, including hormonal changes, skin injuries, and certain medications.

Now that we know what we're dealing with, let's dive into how to prevent these not-so-welcomed visitors on your skin this summer.

  • Sunscreen, Religiously!
  • We all know the importance of sunscreen by now (right?). Sunscreen helps prevent dark spots by protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, which are the main cause of sun-induced hyperpigmentation, by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, even on cloudy days, you can protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, significantly reducing the risk of dark spots forming. Remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating, If you're likely to forget, set a reminder on your phone; always works for me!

  •  Avoid Going Out During Peak Hours
  • Since we're always on the go, following this tip might seem a bit challenging—I understand, trust me! However, it's important due to the sun's strongest rays arising between 12 PM and 4 PM. Try to stay in the shade during these hours. If you must be outside, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses will help protect your skin and the delicate skin around your eyes from dark spots and wrinkles.

  • Use Antioxidant-Rich Skincare Products
  • Antioxidants! The power they have! Incorporating products with antioxidants like vitamin C and E into your skincare routine can help neutralize free radicals caused by sun exposure, reducing the risk of dark spots. Also, definitely consider using pure cold-pressed argan oil as a night treatment. Why? Argan oil is rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids that help repair skin damage and lighten dark spots over time. Applying a few drops of argan oil to your face before bed can nourish your skin and enhance its ability to heal and regenerate, resulting in a more even complexion with regular use.

  • The Dark Spot Fighting Trio!
  • Don’t overlook the potency of retinol, niacinamide, and glycolic acid in combating dark spots! Retinol boosts cell turnover, niacinamide evens skin tone, and glycolic acid exfoliates for a brighter complexion. Incorporating products with these ingredients into your routine can fade existing dark spots and prevent new ones from appearing, ensuring a radiant complexion over time. Begin with 2-3 times a week and gradually increase the frequency.

  • Stay Hydrated
  • You guessed it—water! Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated and healthy, improving its ability to repair itself and prevent sun damage. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day for skin that glows from within!

  • Exfoliate Regularly
  • Our skin cells regenerate every 27 days. That's why it's important to get rid of old, dead skin cells to make way for new ones. Gently exfoliate your skin 1-2 times a week to remove dead skin cells, impurities, and dryness, this also helps fade existing dark spots and prevents new ones from forming.

  • After-Sun Care
  • If you've spent too much time under the sun's rays, reach for ingredients like aloe vera, pure argan oil, or after-sun lotions to cool and heal sun-exposed skin immediately. These products work wonders in calming and reducing the chance of dark spots forming, ensuring your skin stays soothed and healthy.
